Griffin
Twenties, slightly more attractive than his lover, Len. More comfortable with silence than words.
Joseph
Forties, white man, gas station attendant, a bit of a klutz physically and emotionally. Average in almost every way.
Len
Twenties, somewhat of a bookworm, a younger brother in all relationships, even the one he has with his lover, Griffin. Attractive, but not overtly so. It helps if Mag and Len look as if they could be brother and sister.
Margaret (Mag)
Twenties, Len's sister. Aggressive, with a sarcastic nature. Always on the attack or defense. Should be played by a young woman large enough to conceal her pregnancy for eight months. She is not self-conscious about her weight and actually relishes in it.
Red Hawk
Sixties, lesbian nomad witch, she is not Native American and should be played by an actor who cannot be mistaken for anything other than a white woman fixated on the Hopi culture. Extremely boisterous and confident. Always a person who knows what she wants, there is nothing dazed and confused about her.
Production Notes
The set and set pieces are suggestive, not literal. It is possible to produce The Hot Month with one chair, one bed, one bench, and some blocks -- or just a bunch of blocks. The play should move effortlessly from scene to scene, with blackouts only happening where noted.
