Resistance

Abe Louise Young

When his scrotum
and penis
are tucked
between
closed thighs,
rendering
their bearer
a silhouette
of prepubescent
girlhood,

then her breasts
get flattened
into armpits,
compressed
so that her chest
is pectoral,
heroic, flat --

its so much
more satisfying
to read literature
(especially
Greek
tragedy)
out loud
that way.

Abe Louise Young lives in Austin, Texas where she teaches and performs. Other recent poems are published in Bloom, New Letters, Hawai'i Review, and Borderlands, and she writes a monthly review for Lambda Book Report. If you'd like to read more, please visit abelouiseyoung.com.
